SJB gears up for Week 8 at Maritime

Posted Thursday, October 23, 2008 by John Fatuzzo
This Friday, the St. John the Baptist Cougars will travel to SUNY Maritime's Reinhart Field to play the Cardinals from Cardinal Hayes High School during Week 8 of the CHSFL regular season.  The game begins at 7:00 pm.

St. John's is heading into their second-to-last regular season game at 4-1, 5-2 overall with a chance to clinch a playoff berth in the CHSFL 'AA' division.  They are currently on a three-game win streak but they are facing another tough Cardinals team which is 3-3, 3-4 overall and fifth place in the 'AA-A' division.

The Cougars defeated Hayes during Week 2 last season, a 31-15 victory at home in SJB's league opener.  St. John's will be looking for a similar result against the Cardinals who are playing much better than their #19 pre-season ranking.  SJB, second place in the division is coming off an exciting 39-34 home victory over Spellman and hope to stay hot on a what should be a chilly Friday night in Manhattan.  The last time the Cougars played at Maritime was last years 'A' division championship game, a heartbraking loss to Xavier.

The Cardinals have lost two in a row to Xavier and St. Peter's but still have some impressive wins in the 2008 season.  They defeated Christ the King in a close 33-32 score during Week 2, blew out Spellman 42-28 in Week 4 and had an impressive win over Moore Catholic, 28-0 in Week 5.  Hayes four losses come against AAA Stepinac and 3 of the 4 AA powerhouses, Xavier, St. Peter's and Kellenberg.

The Hayes running game is split by senior Wesley Lawyer and junior Keith Goode, who have combined for nine runshing touchdowns this year.  Junior quarterback Kwamayne Davis has thrown ten touchdown passes.  In total, the Cardinals offense has put up the fourth most points in the division as they make a strong case to be seeded #1 in the CHSFL's 'A' division.
