Cougars Gear Up for AA Quarterfinal

Posted Wednesday, November 05, 2008 by John Fatuzzo
The regular season is over and the playoffs are ready to begin.  In fact, the Cougars are more ready than ever, moving into the Division AA playoffs for the first time in almost ten years.  St. John the Baptist (6-3, 5-2 league) travels to Coffey Field at Fordham University to take on the Rams of Fordham Prep High School (3-6, 1-6 league).  The Cougars and Rams are facing off in the division semi-final.

St. John's, although playing a division lower than the Rams last season, lost a close a game to Fordam in Week 7 at home in 2007.  The score was 28-21.  But these are two different teams ready to rumble as they head for gridiron glory.  Fordham is a much better team than their 3-6 record indicates; the reason why they played in AAA for the regular seson.

The Rams have good offensive weapons in junior running back Bruce Grant and senior quarterback Chris Moffa.  But St. John's is countering with a top-notch offense that put up spectacular numbers in the 2008 season.  SJB is led by Matt Pryzby, who has over 1,300 passing yards this season, third in the CHSFL.  Senior running back Thomas Beverly holds the Cougars all-time career rushing yard record and is one of the top backs in the CHSFL.

However, these are all just numbers, none of which mean anything for the quarterfinals this weekend.  SJB has a big challenge ahead of them, coming off a tough loss to St. Peter's to close out the regular season but just the thought of needing just three more wins to get the title makes everything else unimportant.  Good luck to the varsity football team this Saturday at 1:30 pm where the season is on the line but a championship could be on the horizon.
